About
“To sit for one’s portrait is like being present at one’s own creation” – Alexander Smith
I am a figurative artist, with an established specialism in portraits, with many years’ experience in observing the human face and form, but also the landscapes of my home and travels, and those who inhabit them. My work is primarily in oils, though I am skilled in the use of all media, and while preferring to work on a larger scale I will happily adapt to any brief.
I have undertaken many commissions, ranging from full-body portraits to head and shoulders, animals, landscape, and – latterly – religious iconography. My aim is to capture not only a physical likeness of the subject, but also their essence, mood and character. My life and training have given me insight and sensitivity into the emotional and spiritual experience of others.
In recent years, thanks to commissions undertaken, I have developed an interest in devotional art and iconography, depicting the styles of various periods, with particular interest in the late Middle Ages.
From the galleries on each page in the menu above, you will see that photo-realism is not my intention, but rather to portray the spirit, whether of person, pet or place through a good physical likeness.
Painting commissions may be for a commemoration, celebration, characterisation or evocation. Live sittings produce the best results, but sittings via Zoom can be arranged, or I can work from a portfolio of photos. Please contact me to discuss your requirements.
